Slides from event Energy & Equity Talks: Buildings. The Tishman Center and the NYC 2030 District hosted a talk on the hows and whys of energy and equity in the NYC area. The event featured speakers with expertise in building energy efficiency, residential solar energy, and building science. They shared their experiences in the field and discussed ways to create more equitable outcomes for energy access.

Photos of Ecology and Sovereignty: Native and Indigenous Perspectives Transcending Boundaries, part of 2017 Earth Week.The Tishman Environment and Design Center convened Native and Indigenous artists, activists, and thought leaders for a powerful conversation highlighting the importance of traditional ecological knowledge. The event emphasized the need to transcend imposed boundaries—of thought, geography, and medium—in order to foster socially just approaches to environmental issues.

Photos of Textile Scrap Workshop: Design Challenge. In partnership with the New York City Department of Sanitation, Materials for the Arts (MFTA) launched a textile scrap reuse initiative, inviting Parsons students to develop creative design solutions. Coordinated by the Parsons Healthy Materials Lab and the Tishman Environment and Design Center, students participated in an interactive, hands-on workshop at the MFTA warehouse in Long Island City, where they explored and prototyped design ideas using a wide array of reclaimed textile scraps and materials. The Tishman Environment and Design Center partnered with the Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management program and the Environmental Studies program to host the annual Earth Week Mixer. All New School students, alumni, and faculty working in environment and sustainability-related fields were invited to attend. Mark Chambers, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, joined as the guest of honor and spoke with students about the importance of inclusive climate action. Part of 2017 Earth Day events.

Climate change experts gathered to discuss the Trump administration’s potential withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and to reflect on the Obama administration’s accomplishments in climate policy. The discussion centered on recent climate science research, the stance of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and anticipated policy shifts under the Trump administration. The Tishman Center kicked off Earth Week by tabling in the University Center. Students, faculty, and staff pledged to take sustainable actions in their daily lives, learned more about clubs on campus, played a game to learn how to properly sort waste, and interacted with a student-designed virtual reality project illustrating the present mass extinction crisis (Iris Qu, MFA Design and Technology ‘17). Sustainapalooza is an annual event organized and led by Eugene Lang students (led by Sasha Hodson, Environmental Studies ’17) who are engaged in efforts to facilitate enhanced urban resiliency and sustainability. This year, Sustainapalooza focused on health and climate change with an emphasis on personal, ecological, and social dimensions of the issues.

Photos of University Center Sustainability Tours led by Erik Eibert. The Tishman Center and New School Buildings held two special Sustainability Tours of the University Center. Tour participants learned about sustainable elements of the building’s design including the green roof, grey water treatment plant, electricity cogeneration, ice storage, and non-toxic building materials. LEAP Entrepreneurship Club partnered with Sure We Can Recycling Center during Earth Week to collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans at The New School with the help of the Tishman Center and the Facilities team. The bottles and cans collected helped support Sure We Can’s mission to support the local community, particularly the most vulnerable residents, and promote social inclusion, environmental awareness, and economic empowerment. Tishman Center staff joined LEAP and other New School students at Sure We Can on Earth Day, April 22nd for a volunteer day.

Jozef Soloff (Environmental Studies ‘16), Sasha Hodson (Environmental Studies ‘16), and Ana
Remis (Environmental Studies ‘18) taught attendees how to make Natural Dye-Sensitized
Solar Cells. Natural Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (NDSC) are an alternative solar technology.
NDSC harvests sunlight with pigments taken from flora, and are cheap and easily made.

In collaboration with the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), the Design Build course
of the School of Constructed Environments, taught by professors Huy Bui and Carlos Gomez
de Llarena, has developed this year’s Street Seats project for the corner of 13th Street and
Fifth Avenue, supported by the Tishman Center. The components of the space were
constructed in-house and installed on site over the course of The New School’s Earth Week.
With a generous amount of planters and movable seating, this public seating area will be an
evolving space over its seven-month lifespan.
