This report communicates the findings, reflections and recommendations from the Milano Whole Earth Task Force’s (hereafter ‘Task Force’) Climate Emergency initiative at The New School (TNS). This includes the Climate Emergency Teach-In (Monday, March 2, 2020), its associated survey, the Climate Emergency public engagement syllabus, broader discussions about curriculum transformation and other processes and reflections leading to and following the teach-in. The Task Force was led by Leonardo E. Figueroa Helland (Milano/EPSM Faculty), Mindy Fullillove, (Milano/Urban Policy Faculty), and Genesis Abreu (EPSM Graduate Research Assistant/BIPOC Earth Student Collective/Climate Solutions Collective).

On Friday, March 20th, a bus full of New School students, faculty, and community members were led on a tour of Newark, New Jersey by Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management Professor Ana Baptista and environmental justice organizers Melissa Miles and Christian Rodriguez from Ironbound Community Corporation. Ironbound Community aims to “address unmet needs and service gaps, particularly for under-served individuals and families” in areas such as early childhood education, youth professional development, environmental justice development, and family outreach. In the environmental realm, ICC is the epitome of grassroots urban environmental justice.

Skills Lab 106 Event: From Columbus to the Nagoya Protocol: How Ecological Imperialism Originated Indigenous Knowledge Exploitation and Biopiracy taught by Fabio Parasecoli, Associate Professor and Director of Food Studies. This skills lab focuses on how contemporary debates about intellectual property and indigenous knowledge still deal with this negative legacy. Skills Lab 2016: El Nino 101: Why care about sea-air interactions in the tropical pacific ocean? by Ivan Ramirez, Assistant Professor of Environmental Health In this skills lab, participants gained a basic understanding of El Niño and ENSO physical dynamics, including its life cycle characteristics and teleconnections with global weather and climate, impacts on societies. This skills lab examines the ecological problems created by continuing to produce animals for food as well as the healthy delicious solutions by alternatively eating plant based meals. Photos from Transforming Our Trash Systems: Environmental Justice and Zero Waste Policies, taught by Ana Baptista, Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management. Garbage is one of the most visible manifestations of environmental injustice in our society. In this skills lab, participants learned about the innovative approaches to improve the current waste management systems in NYC and the concept of zero waste and zero waste policies for the region that can be pursued to achieve environmental justice. This was part of TEDC's 2016 Skills Labs, which were workshops on pressing environmental issues, taught by Tishman Center Affiliated Faculty.
